Half-square triangles — HSTs to every quilter on earth — are two fabric triangles sewn into a square, and they are the single most versatile unit in patchwork. Pinwheels, stars, chevrons, zigzags, and hundreds of classic blocks are just HSTs arranged differently. Master one sewing technique and you've unlocked most of quilting.

The Method Pros Use: Two at a Time

  1. Cut two squares of fabric, each 7/8 inch larger than your finished HST size (a pattern calling for 3″ finished HSTs → cut 3 7/8″ squares).
  2. Layer them right sides together and draw one diagonal line on the back with a fabric pencil.
  3. Sew a quarter inch away from the line on both sides.
  4. Cut along the drawn line. You now have two HSTs, each a mirror image of the other.
  5. Press toward the darker fabric — press, don't iron; a sliding iron stretches triangles out of shape.
  6. Trim to exact size with a square ruler, lining the diagonal seam with the ruler's 45° line.

Need Lots of HSTs? Eight at a Time

For blocks with many HSTs, start with two large squares, each 1¾ inches larger than your finished size. Draw both diagonals, sew a quarter inch on all four sides of the sandwich, then cut vertically, horizontally, and along both diagonals. Two big squares become eight HSTs in one pass — the fastest bulk method there is.

Why Trimming Is Non-Negotiable

Sewing a diagonal seam through bias edges always wobbles a little. Trimming every HST to the exact unfinished size (finished size + half inch) before assembly is the difference between points that meet and points that don't. Yes, it's tedious. Yes, do it anyway — it's the habit that separates crisp quilts from crumpled ones.

Three Common HST Problems, Fixed

Beginner shortcut: the famous 7/8″ rule assumes perfect sewing. If your seams wobble, cut your starting squares a full inch larger and trim down — accuracy beats economy on your first few quilts.
